Some critics have said San Diego should follow that route or at least reveal who’s on the advisory panel up front.ĭonna Frye, past president of the open government group California Aware, said she doesn’t have a problem with keeping applicants confidential. Other cities have had a more open process, including public knowledge of who the police chief applicants are, or the finalists. “These flash-point issues can really turn the selection process into a lightning rod.” “I certainly understand the city’s position,” said Trevor Blair, principal and founder of Blair Search Partners, which is not involved in San Diego’s police chief search. Officer-involved shootings, racial profiling concerns, body camera use and other matters roil the public and can make an open process more difficult. The plan is to have a new chief hired by the time Zimmerman steps down.įrom the city’s perspective, a chief of police is a contentious position - not that there isn’t politics in higher education - and demands a protected search. The application period closed last Friday, and while he didn’t have numbers, Villa said there’s a broad spectrum of candidates. “We want to get the most qualified applicants interested in the city of San Diego process,” he said. Villa says this process, worked out in consultation with management firms, avoids the potential of a volatile public process “that tends to discourage applicants.” That information was gathered and will be forwarded to the advisory committee. Sometime before that meeting, but after their work is done, advisory committee members will be identified, Villa said.Įarlier, the city held several public forums on what qualities people want in a police chief. There will be a public comment period as well. Faulconer will send his nomination to the City Council for a confirmation hearing, where members can question the candidate and make comments. Recommendations then go to the mayor to make a selection. The advisory committee will look at that group and make recommendations to a smaller panel of law enforcement experts who will zero in on the candidates’ records, experience and managerial abilities, according to Villa. “All 24 panel positions will be filled by members of community groups throughout the City, including representatives from several of the City’s boards and commissions,” Katie Keach, the city’s communications director, said in an email.Ĭity officials and a contracted executive search firm, Roseville-based Bob Murray & Associates, will weed out unlikely candidates early on and bring the pool down to a manageable size. This gives the public an idea of those involved without exposing individual members. The city will publicly name those groups before the candidate vetting gets underway, but will not name the individuals until later, according to Ron Villa, the city’s deputy chief operating officer. In the face of some criticism, Mayor Kevin Faulconer’s administration says this is a transparent process and here’s why: Community groups are being asked to name a representative to the advisory committee. The reasoning is that panelists, if known, could be subject to pressure from interest groups as well as candidates seeking to replace Chief Shelley Zimmerman, who retires in March. Who is on the city’s police chief advisory committee is being kept private for now. Although the 24-hour clock is widely established, the globe and communication are always evolving, and who knows what the developing global community may require next? Why Does the Military Adopt a 24-Hour System? Most English-speaking nations anticipate The United States typically alternates between 12-hour and 24-hour time since none has been recognized as the standard. The 24-hour clock is largely utilized in non-English speaking nations such as Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa. Today, military time is as much a part of the culture as tactical gear and tactical hydration packs, which no soldier can live without. Military time is most widely utilized by the military, government, public transit, hospitals, meteorologists, astronomers, emergency responders, and many other citizens. There is no misunderstanding with military time since the numbers never repeat themselves. We’ve all made the mistake of setting our alarm for 6:00 pm instead of 6:00 am, causing us to be late for crucial occasions. Military time is employed to minimize confusion between A.M. When World War II began, the military adopted the 24-hour timekeeping system and somewhat adjusted it in terms of pronunciation and presentation.ĭespite the fact that the rest of the United States uses 12-hour time, it is now the “standard” time system in the military. The equinox was used to calculate hours, and from there, we have a system in which night and daytime are equal, and an hour lasts 60 minutes. Hipparchus, an astronomer, devised equinoctial hours between 147 and 127 BC, which regulated the duration of time regardless of the season. The “evidence” is a coffin lid known as the “ Diagonal Star Table.” In early Egyptian civilization, the military time system was thought to be coordinated with constellation patterns traveling through the sky. Military history may be dated back to around 2100 BC, during Egypt’s 11th Dynasty. What is The Military’s Brief History?īefore we get into why the military employs military time, it’s important to understand the history of this timekeeping system. When utilizing local time, the military follows Daylight Savings Time if it is recognized by the state or nation in which the installation is situated. “The Commander wants to see you at 1500 hrs,” which implies you need to be in the Commander’s office at three p.m., local time. In other words, “report to duty at zero seven hundred (0700)” means you must be at work at seven a.m., local time. Most military personnel utilize local time as a guideline for most everyday tasks. Anything prior to double digits is preceded by a zero, which is spoken as an “O.” For example, 4:00 am in military time is 0400, which you would state as “ Zero Four Hundred.” For double digits, the number is simply followed by the word “hundred,” e.g., “ Thirteen Hundred.” When referencing military time, the 24 hours on a clock are translated into segments of hundreds. or p.m., the period in time is indicated by using a full 24-hour clock. Rather than denoting the time of day with a.m. The military uses a 24-hour time system instead. Conversely, if you planned to meet later in the day, you would ask to get together at 3:00 pm. For example, if you were to set a meeting with your boss for nine in the morning, you would request a meeting for 9:00 am. to indicate whether it is daytime or nighttime. These 12-hour periods are followed by a.m. What is The 24-hour Military Time System?įor most civilians, the time of day is referenced based on 12-hour periods. Think of it as a behind-the-scenes bit of code that standardizes how a screenplay is supposed to look, which is shareable and FREE for new, smaller developers to use and incorporate into any new screenwriting software they’d like to create or enhance.) (Fountain is the new open-source markup language that lets a lot of different new screenwriting apps share a common script formatting standard. Other great features I love about Trelby: it exports Fountain markup. Oh, and by the way, Trebly inputs Final Draft files, and saves Final Draft files, so if you’re thinking of making the switch, you can do so in a very friendly, non-destructive way. Trelby’s lag is virtually non-existent, even when I loaded in a test script. Especially over the course of a 90-page screenplay, consisting of 6 months of work, and 20-30 drafts. But those tiny bits of “lag” – even if they’re just mere milliseconds between your keystroke and what appears on the screen – they really add up. All good screenwriting programs do this, of course, but Trelby’s just feels FAST. COFFEE SHOP – NIGHT, then hit Tab and it jumps down and awaits your input for the action/description line. Very intuitive tabbingįor new screenwriters: By tabbing I mean, for example, you type INT. I jumped right in and started writing a scene, and it just flew. The interface is sleek, plain, and modern, and fully customizable. Wow! This app is an elegant, easy-to-use, streamlined little firecracker of a screenwriting program. Take it from me - I’m a desktop guy who used to vehemently poo-poo using anything other than Final Draft, but here are a few others worth your attention: Trelby Whereas software development used to be the realm of large, well-funded companies and teams made up of dozens, if not hundreds of developers and programmers, now it’s all about the smaller, more agile companies rushing in to fill an ever-increasing demand for lighter, cheaper apps, and we screenwriters stand to benefit from the panoply of new options for screenwriting. As the name of the article states: I’m here to provide some cheaper and free alternatives to Final Draft that, in my opinion, really give Final Draft a run for its money. I don’t quite remember much other than I wasn’t a very good beta tester because I was extremely busy at the time, and that the Final Draft folks were very nice and responsive.īut I’m not here to rake Final Draft over the coals. Update 5/23/22 - A few months after this article was originally published, I was invited to take part in the beta development for Final Draft. And Final Draft is there with a fair priced offering for it. And while screenwriters who got their start during the heady days of the typewriter (like me and many of my generation X) are probably not keen on the idea of writing a screenplay on a tablet, thousands of younger screenwriters have no problem banging out scripts on a mobile device. There are tons of excellent features that make Final Draft a solid writing app, and most folks wouldn’t dream of trading their Final Draft for another screenwriting app.Īnd as far as pricing goes, I have to emphasize that Final Draft does offer a lower-cost version of their app for iOS, as well as educational discounts, so my beef with their pricing isn’t full-on Kobe / Angus. But I don’t blame Final Draft – they’ve created and marketed a great product that basically now dominates the screenwriting space.Īnd that domination didn’t come just through great marketing. $199 for Final Draft 12 is a big chunk of change for most aspiring screenwriters. The game has changed when it comes to simplicity and UI design, yet Final Draft still feels a bit stuck in that 90s Microsoft Word vibe, as does its cousin, Movie Magic Screenwriter, and many other writing apps, if we’re being perfectly honest.ĭislike 3) The price. But it was certainly mine, on two different sets of hardware over several years and on several iterations of operating systems.ĭislike 2) The interface/user experience. Is that everybody’s experience? I don’t know. Though it did crash on the Mac, it crashed a lot less than when I ran it on my pc. And to be certain, Final Draft is a solid app and deserves a lot of credit, and certainly not hate.īut what do I strongly dislike about Final Draft? Three things:ĭislike 1) Before I switched from a Windows machine to a Mac, Final Draft had a penchant for crashing in the most inopportune moments, no matter what version I ran. I reserve that word for shows like The Bachelor. What do I hate? Well, “hate” is a strong word. And 95% of the time, that’s either a PDF or, you guessed it, a Final Draft file.) (And if you’re running a script coverage service like me, you need to be able to open whatever file the client sends in. What do I love? Its ubiquity: Everybody uses it. They can help you collect and organize all of the numbers needed to calculate your cash flow. This information is something your accountant or bookkeeper keeps track of. Cash flows out through your expenses-think, rent for office space, payments on business loans or credit cards, or outstanding invoices. Cash comes in through customers or clients buying your services. Put simply, cash flow is a record of the money flowing into and out of your business. This is where calculating cash flow comes in. The financial health of your small business should always be a priority to support continued success. Not unlike actual parenting, it takes a lot of time, energy (hello, fifth cup of coffee before noon), and nurturing to ensure your baby is at its healthiest. An increasing ratio over time would indicate a company has the ability to grow internally. As an entrepreneur, we know that your business is your baby. (When comparing similar companies a higher ratio would indicate the better ability to make additional capital expenditures without issuing more debt or equity. (This ratio tells you how many time periods (usually years) it would take to pay off company debt if all the cash flow from operations was used to pay down debt.)Ĭash Flow to Capital Expenditures Ratio = Cash Flow From Operations / Capital Expenditures (A high ratio is better than a low ratio when analyzing two similar companies.) A high return may signal a bright future for the company because they will have more cash flow to reinvest for growth and to return to shareholders.Ĭash Flow to Debt Ratio = Cash Flow From Operations / Total Debt (A higher ratio is better than a lower ratio when analyzing two similar companies.)Ĭash Return on Assets tells how efficient a company is at employing its assets. (When comparing similar companies a higher yield would indicate a better value than a lower yield.)Ĭash Return On Assets = Cash Flow From Operations (CFO) / Total Assets Or turn it around to get the CFO Enterprise Yield….ĬFO Enterprise Yield = Cash Flow From Operations (CFO) / Enterprise Value (EV) (When comparing similar companies a lower ratio would be a better value than a higher ratio.) It is the lifeblood of the organization, making it one of the most important metrics an analyst can examine.ĮV to CFO = Enterprise Value (EV) / Cash Flow From Operations (CFO) The purpose of defining Cash Flow From Operations is to isolate and focus on the well-being of the day-to-day operations or core business of the company. It is cash flow from operations that will be used to make capital expenditures, design new products, make acquisitions (investing activities), pay dividends, buy back stock, and/or reduce debt (financing activities). Investing and financing activities are usually cash flow negative, making positive cash flow from operations essential in the long run. In the long run cash flow from operations must be positive for the company to remain solvent. The cash flow from operations is detailed first in the cash flow statement and tells you how much cash flow has been generated by the core operations of the business, as opposed to secondary activities such as investing and financing. Purpose of Cash Flow From Operations (CFO) You could calculate working capital from the balance sheet even if you didn’t have a cash flow statement. Working Capital is current assets – current liabilities. The components of working capital are balance sheet items. (d) Changes in Working Capital – Found as line items in the Cash Flow Statement. One time adjustments could include non-cash items such as deferred taxes, investment gains/losses not related to operations, stock based compensation to employees, etc.) Many times these will be listed separately in the income statement. (c) One-Time Adjustments – Found as line items in the Cash Flow Statement. Therefore you need to add this expense back into net income to calculate cash flow. However, this does not reduce their cash, it is only an accounting expense. When a company purchases long lived assets they are required to amortize (spread) the cost over a number of years. (b) Depreciation & Amortization – Non-cash item found as a Cash Flow Statement line item. Therefore we need to make adjustments to figure cash flow. Net income is an accounting metric that includes items that don’t affect cash. Net Income – Found in the company’s Income Statement Cash Flow From Operations (CFO) CalculationĬash Flow From Operations (CFO) = (a) Net Income + (b) Depreciation & Amortization +/- (c) One-Time Adjustments +/- (d) Change in Working Capital Up once, except we have the 23, it shows up twice. Poulter, Adrian Otaegui of Spain and Justin Harding of South Africa appealed, allowing players to compete in European tour events. The European tour fined its players for competing at Centurion Club last June and suspended them from the Scottish Open. It now is in the discovery process, and any trial is not scheduled until next January at the earliest. That case is slowly moving through a federal court in California. A federal judge denied that request in August. Three players asked for a temporary restraining order against the PGA Tour that would have allowed them to continue to compete in PGA Tour events. The PGA Tour then filed a countersuit against LIV. Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau were among nine players who filed an antitrust lawsuit in August against the PGA Tour, and now LIV Golf has joined the lawsuit while all but three players removed themselves as plaintiffs. I was personally a big fan of playing Man Darts, a game where you hit someone hard enough to send their lifeless corpse flying toward a giant dart board for points. You have to kill everyone around you to win, and the violence is hilariously over the top. Part Smash TV, part Final Fight, MadWorld puts you in control of a man put in a brutal murderous game show. Sort of like how the Sin City movie painted on a black and white canvas with occasional splashes of color, MadWorld is equally black & white, and the only splashes of color were red from all the buckets of blood you spilled. MadWorld embraced the Wii’s limitations by playing with color to make it visually stunning. It isn’t going to change anyone’s life and it was never going to win any Game of the Year awards. But they're all games that would benefit from landing on a platform other than the Wii. These aren’t all forgotten masterpieces, and they aren’t all rated M either. Today we’re going to look at ten of the most interesting 3rd party adult-oriented Wii games that haven’t been ported to HD yet. But the well of other games of their ilk that didn’t catch on runs deep. Rail shooters like the Resident Evil Chronicles games, Dead Space: Extraction, and House of the Dead: Overkill all found new homes and audiences on PlayStation 3 thanks to the Move accessory. The No More Heroes franchise managed to perform solidly enough to get itself a string of sequels and ports on HD consoles. There were a few games that made it out unscathed. Players didn’t bite going forward, and the Wii’s more adult-oriented fare languished on store shelves until the system’s demise. Unfortunately it just wasn’t a very good game and it was all downhill from there. Unfortunately they were tied to Red Steel, a game that sold phenomenally well based on the presumption that it was a showcase for that the Wii’s motion controls were truly capable of. Motion controls for 1st person shooters were among the earliest benefits touted when the system debuted. With a name like Wii it isn’t hard to imagine why people looking for the latest violent thriller wouldn’t turn to that platform for their fix, but it turns out the system was remarkably well suited for those kinds of experiences. Nintendo platforms are for kids.Įven more so than Nintendo themselves, 3rd party publishers have a history of trying to tap into the adult Nintendo market, and nowhere in Nintendo’s history has there been a more sad string of failures than on the Wii. Nintendo never stopped dabbling in that pool though, publishing killer games like Metroid Prime, Eternal Darkness, and Bayonetta 2, but no matter how good they turned out, Nintendo’s image problem remained.
